french fries

The county fair I grew up attending was very different from the Ohio county fairs that I’ve come to know and love.

In Albemarle County Virginia we had livestock. And fair food booths. And a big ferris wheel, merry-go-round and slide, as well as other classic fair rides.

But nothing was permanent. The fair took over a cow-field for a week, then disappeared, tents disassembled and trailers hitched to trucks. You’d drive by in a few weeks and see only cows walking the lines of the well-worn parking lot.

Ohio fairs, at least the few I’ve been to, are at least two to three times the size of my fair. They have permanent livestock barns and milking parlors and arenas with stadium seating. They are pretty awesome…

And the food? It may mostly come from drive-in trailers, but the variety is just absurd. Gyros? Walking tacos? French waffles? This is fair food?

I still search for a good barbeque stand. The way we always did at home. And we always get a funnel cake. Some things you just have to keep the same.

side note: the fair I used to go to doesn’t really exist anymore. The land was bought and turned into a vineyard. I’m sure they profit from the undeniably perfect view, but I do miss that fair…
